The above pictured doe is a brood animal. She is a false dwarf. Let me break it down even more:
False dwarfs are animals that are a dwarf breed(Jersey Woolies, holland lops, Netherland dwarfs, etc) that did not receive the dwarfing gene. When this happens with a buck, we call them "BUBS"(Big Ugly Bucks). These animals are NOT useful in a breeding program. A doe that has not received a dwarfing gene is called a "BUD" Big Ugly Doe ;this is an affectionate term. These animals are extremely valuable in a breeding program. They are larger than a true dwarf(which means more babies!) animal and have the EXACT SAME RATIO of producing true dwarf animals if bred to a true dwarf buck as a non-false dwarf doe would. You following?
Do your punnet square. A true dwarf has one dwarfing gene. Where as a false does not. A PEANUT has two- peanuts die as the double dwarfing gene is always fatal. A false dwarf means you will NEVER get a peanut. I like that!
True dwarf x true dwarf = 25% peanuts 25% False dwarfs 50% True Dwarfs
False Dwarf x True Dwarf= 50% False Dwarfs 50% True Dwarfs
FALSE DWARFS eliminate the possibility of getting peanuts! Awesome!
When the dwarfing gene is not given to a dwarf breed, it makes the head shape less round and more snipey. The ears are longer, as is the body. Their overall weight is in general more than that of a true dwarf.
These animals will not do well on the show table usually. HOWEVER, this does not belittle their value. I have heard countless times how much a breeder loves the fact that their brood does produce the most babies and have the easiest time raising litters compared to their show does.

Pictured above is one of the true dwarfs does produced by the Brood doe pictured earlier in the post. Note the shorter ears, rounder face, and short body. This little doe turned out to be a beautiful show animal.
Brood animals are amazingly valuable. They will continue to live and stay in my barn, leaving their legacy behind.
